ABOUT THE TOUR
It’s now possible to explore both the South Coast of Iceland AND a natural ice cave in a single day tour from Reykjavik. There’s no need to choose between one tour or the other, and no need to hire a car. Let us take care of everything while you sit back, relax, and prepare to be awed by just how much natural beauty we have to show you in one day. This is a once in a lifetime adventure that you can only experience with a Katlatrack guide. We are the only tour company to combine a South Coast tour with a visit to a natural ice cave in a single day.
Our day starts at 8:00am, when your Katlatrack driver collects you from central Reykjavik. Our small group will head south, as we wind our way through the ever changing scenery towards the breathtaking south coast. Our first stop is Hvolsvöllur for some coffee and snacks for the day.
The next stop is our home town of Vik, where we meet up with your Katlatrack Ice Cave Guide and our adventure begins! We’ll climb into a super jeep and take an exhilarating ride through the private back road of Vik to reach the glacier area.
In true Katlatrack style, this will be an offbeat experience that will show you the quieter, authentic side of Iceland, far away from the crowds and the mainstream tours. As local guides, we spend more time than anyone else exploring this landscape and we know where all of the best ice caves hide! We’re also proud to say that we are one of the very few companies who can offer ice cave tours all year round, thanks to our extensive local knowledge and our expert caving skills.
As always, your safety is paramount on our tours. Visitors should never risk exploring an ice cave without a highly experienced guide, so after fitting you up with some of our loan equipment (a helmet, head lamp and some crampons for your shoes), we’ll provide a full safety brief before making our way to the cave. After a short (10-15 minute) walk across the glacier, we’re ready to enter our ice cave!
When we say, “visiting an ice cave is a once in a lifetime experience”, this is 100% true. The ice caves are constantly melting and reforming all the time, so we love to share this year’s caves with our guests before they are gone forever. We’ll spend around 30 to 45 minutes inside the cave, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore, admire the crazy shapes and beautiful colours, take photos, ask questions, and learn all about how these magnificent structures are formed. After a short hike back to the super jeep, we’ll take another exciting ride through the wild local terrain on our way back to Vik.
From here, we’ll wave farewell to your Ice Cave Guide and start our journey back to Reykjavik. Our adventure continues on the way home however, as we detour along Iceland’s Ring Road and pay a visit to two of its most famous waterfalls.
Our first stop is the thundering Skógafoss, where you’ll marvel at the power of this towering waterfall and learn all about the legend of the secret treasure that it hides. Our final stop is Seljalandsfoss, a truly magnificent and picturesque waterfall, and one that you can even walk behind during the summer months.
Our tour will then conclude back in Reykjavik, where our driver will leave you with many memories to keep and many stories to share.
